Our Board Members

President
Saghir Ahmed, MD
Dr Ahmed completed his MBBS from Dow Medical College, and soon after graduation, he moved to USA. He completed his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia. After finishing his training he joined Medical College as an Assistant Professor of medicine in the Department of Nephrology. Later, he moved to Middle Georgia and join Central Georgia Nephrology specialist practice. He is also associated with Mercer School of Medicine, as an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Nephrology). Dr. Ahmed is involved with early children education in Pakistan and he has been working with Manzil Education Organization for the last 20 years.

Mariam Akbar
Mariam Naz Akbar graduated from Emory University in 2020 and earned her Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University in 2023. She was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 2024. Passionate about community engagement, Mariam serves on the Oxford College Alumni Board and is the founding member of the Emory University APIDA Alumni Board. Her dedication to advocacy and service extends beyond her legal career, as she actively supports initiatives that promote equity and access to education. As a board member, Mariam brings her leadership and community-focused vision to help advance our mission of empowering underserved populations through education.

Executive Director
Syed Uzair Mahmood
MD | MPH | MBA | CPH | FRSPH
Dr. Mahmood is a medical graduate of Jinnah Sindh Medical University and holds a postgraduate degree in Public Health from The Queen's University of Belfast. With a deep commitment to global health and social impact, Dr. Mahmood has served in various leadership and managerial roles within U.S.-based nonprofits focused on improving health and education in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). His extensive experience in public health and nonprofit management equips him with the skills to lead our organization with vision and purpose. As Executive Director, Dr. Mahmood is dedicated to advancing our mission of empowering underserved communities through access to quality education and opportunities for growth.

Advisor
Sohail Akbar, MD
Dr. Akbar is a board-certified nephrologist from Macon, GA. He is an alumnus of Emory University School of Medicine, where he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Nephrology. With a deep passion for social equity, Dr. Akbar brings a unique blend of medical expertise and visionary leadership to our organization. His commitment to empowering underserved communities extends beyond healthcare, as he actively works to shape BFF’s mission of providing free, quality education to all children. Through his innovative plans and tireless efforts, Dr. Akbar strives to create equal opportunities for the overlooked, driving us toward a future where education is a fundamental right accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.
